East Lansing Trojans Varsity’s bats were strong against Ionia on Friday, but it wasn’t enough as East Lansing Trojans Varsity fell 9-6.
Ionia fired up the offense in the first inning. Ionia scored one run when Clayton Scheurer doubled.
In the bottom of the second inning, East Lansing Trojans Varsity tied things up at two. Nicolas Baidoon drove in two when he singled.
After Ionia scored two runs in the top of the fifth, East Lansing Trojans Varsity answered with two of their own. Ionia scored when Dyago Flores doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs. East Lansing Trojans Varsity then answered when Marty Johnson’s sac fly scored one run for East Lansing Trojans Varsity.
Ionia pulled away for good with three runs in the third inning. In the third Matt Grand-Girard singled on a 3-2 count, scoring one run and Scheurer singled on a 0-2 count, scoring one run.
Gage Taylor was credited with the victory for Ionia. He went five innings, allowing six runs on five hits and striking out seven.
Nolan Ballard took the loss for East Lansing Trojans Varsity. He allowed eight hits and seven runs over four innings, striking out six and walking zero.
East Lansing Trojans Varsity hit one home run on the day. Sam Busch put one out in the third inning.
Aiden Rudy, Jayth Joseph, Cameron Darnell, Busch, and Baidoon each collected one hit to lead East Lansing Trojans Varsity.
Ionia totaled ten hits in the game. Bryce Phelps, Scheurer, Mathew Meyer, and Taylor each racked up multiple hits for Ionia. Scheurer led Ionia with three stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with eight stolen bases.
